Getting to the Festival

The Golden Gate Festival on Sunday, May 27, 2012—coinciding with Memorial Day weekend —is sure to be popular. Be sure sure to plan appropriately!

No parking is available on festival grounds and parking nearby is extremely limited, so walking, biking, or taking public transportation are encouraged. Please do not drive to or near the event. You can find trip-planning help at 511.org, by calling 511 (711 for TDD), or on the Golden Gate Bridge Highway & Transportation District's website.

Road Closures

The Presidio will be closed to through traffic from 9 am-Midnight. Gates will be open only to Presidio residents with access passes, pedestrians, bicyclists, transit, taxis, and shuttles. The Lombard/Marina gate will be closed to all private vehicles, including those with access passes. 

The Golden Gate Bridge will be closed from 9-10 pm for the fireworks show. Do not travel to the Bridge or use Bridge access roads at that time. Consider using the Richmond-San Rafael and Bay Bridges for alternate travel throughout the day. For more information, visit the Bridge district website.

Bridge sidewalks will be closed at 6 pm and will reopen following the fireworks.

Public Transportation

Estimated travel time to Crissy Field from downtown San Francisco: 30-40 minutes

San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (MUNI) >
From 1 pm until after the event, SFMTA will run a 47 Limited service on Van Ness Avenue to Marina Green serving ONLY the following stops: Civic Center, Van Ness and Geary, Van Ness and Sacramento, and Fillmore and Bay at Marina Green. Post event, customers can board at Fillmore and Bay to return to the Civic Center.  Supplemental Muni service will also be added to the 22, 28 and 30 routes.

Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District (AC Transit) >
Bus services between the East Bay and the San Francisco Transbay Terminal.

San Mateo County Transit (SAMTRANS) >
Bus services between San Mateo County and San Francisco.

CalTrain >
Caltrain will operate Saturday schedule rail services along the San Francisco Peninsula to 4th and King Streets in San Francisco, including a train departing San Francisco at 12:01 am.

Sunday, May 27: Added service on Routes 70 and 80 to/from San Francisco; added service connecting Highway 101 Park & Ride Lots in Sonoma and Marin to/from Golden Gate Larkspur Ferry Terminal

Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) >
BART will operate its regular Sunday service with all trains operating at commute lengths and extra event trains operating throughout the day. Following the Golden Gate Festival fireworks (which start at 9:30 pm), BART will have extra trains ready to provide supplemental service for those spectators returning on BART. Extra Station Agents and BART Police will be available to assist customers and monitor crowding. 

The closest stations to the Embarcadero are the Embarcadero and Montgomery Street Stations. Civic Center station is convenient to the Northern waterfront if you are connecting to a Van Ness bus route.

BART encourages all customers to purchase round trip tickets in advance to avoid lines at stations. The regional transit Clipper Card can be purchased at many retailers and works on most Bay Area Transit systems.

PresidiGo >
The PresidiGo Around-the-Park shuttles will operate on an expanded Sunday schedule with service starting at 9 am and running into the late evening. The regular Crissy Field Route will be modified to provide more direct and frequent service between the Main Post and Crissy field. All signed Presidio parking restrictions will be in effect on May 27.

Blue & Gold Fleet >
Blue & Gold Fleet will operate its regular Sunday schedule of ferry services between Sausalito and Tiburon, and Baylink service between Vallejo and Pier 39 in San Francisco. Larger capacity vessels will be used but space is limited. Bikes are allowed on all ferries. Please arrive early, as access to all services will be first come, first serve.

Walking & Biking 

Estimated travel time to Crissy Field from downtown San Francisco: 30 minutes by bike, 90 minutes by foot

Biking
Monitored self bike park is available at Crissy Field East, Sports Basement Parking Lot, Little Marina Green, and Marina Green East. Marina Green East will have valet bike parking available as well. Please bring your own lock. See Map (PDF) for all locations. Be safe and bring a light for ride home. 

Pedestrian and Bike Access Through the Presidio
Presidio gates will be open only to pedestrians, bicyclists, transit, taxis, and shuttles. The Marina Gate will be open ONLY to emergency vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists. No entrance to the Presidio through the Marina Gate for taxis or shuttles. Help make this celebration memorable and safe. Don’t drive! Thank you for your support. Taxis are welcome into all of the Presidio Gates except Marina Gate and will drop off at the Main Post on Taylor Street between Lincoln Blvd and Sheridan Ave. The PresidiGo will have bus service to Crissy Field from the Main Post.

    Sunday, May 27:  OPEN at sunrise, CLOSURE in progress 5-6 pm, CLOSED from 6-10:15 pm, REOPEN 10:15 pm until at least midnight depending upon crowds for pedestrians only (times approximate)
  • Golden Gate Bridge WEST Sidewalk
    Friday, May 25: OPEN, normal hours, bikes only 3:30 pm to sunset
    Saturday, May 26: OPEN normal hours for bikes only, sunrise to sunset
    Sunday, May 27: OPEN at sunrise, CLOSURE IN progress 5-6 pm, OPEN to 6 pm, CLOSED 6-10:15 pm, OPEN 10:15 pm until at least midnight depending upon crowds for bikes only (times approximate)
  • Alexander Avenue at Golden Gate Bridge north end to/from Sausalito
    Friday, May 25: OPEN
    Saturday, May 26: OPEN
    Sunday, May 27: OPEN to 6 pm, CLOSED 6 pm-midnight to vehicles and remains OPEN for foot traffic and bicycles once bikes and foot traffic clear at about midnight (times approximate)

 

Driving 

No public parking will be available in the Presidio, Crissy Field, or Marina Green. Help make this celebration memorable and safe. Don’t drive! Thank you for your support.

ADA
ADA parking is available in limited areas, on a first come-first serve basis at Marina Green Drive off of Marina Blvd. and Buchanan St., Marina Middle School at Bay St. between Fillmore St. and Laguna St., and at Yacht Road at Marina Blvd. ADA drop off zones are on Broderick St. at Marina Blvd., Scott St. at Marina Blvd., and Buchanan St. at Marina Blvd.  As there is no other parking available at the festival, we anticipate ADA parking to fill very early in the day.

Access Through the Presidio
On Sunday May 27 the Presidio gates (except the Lombard/Marina gate) will be open only to pedestrians, bicyclists, transit, taxis, and shuttles. All vehicular access into the Presidio will be by pre-issued access pass ONLY. The Lombard/Marina gate is closed to all private vehicles, including taxis and those with access passes.

Taxis
Taxis are welcome at all of the Presidio Gates except Lombard/Marina and will drop off at the Main Post on Taylor Street Between Lincoln Blvd and Sheridan Ave. The PresidiGo will have bus service to Crissy Field from the Presidio Main Post.

  • Golden Gate Bridge Vista Point Parking Lot (north east end of GGB – Caltrans jurisdiction)

    Sunday, May 27: CLOSED to vehicles at 5 pm. Vehicles can exit the lot up to approximately 9 pm. From approximately 9 pm until after the fireworks, vehicles will not be allowed to exit the lot. After 5 pm, the public is allowed to continue access Vista Point by foot or bicycle only. As bridge sidewalks begin to CLOSE at 5 pm, there will be no access to the sidewalks starting at 5 pm. There will only be access allowed out of Vista Point lot north to Alexander Ave. heading into Sausalito.


End of Night Exit

Depending on weather conditions, crowds may be very large at Crissy Field, East Beach and Marina Green. Safe exiting procedures have been developed in conjunction with local public safety agencies. Safety lighting will be provided along major Crissy Field egress corridors. People should be prepared for a long, slow walking exit at the end of the fireworks display.
